Michael Curtis Ford
This is an excellent fictional account of the march of Xenophon’s army from Persia back to Greece, a tale originally told by Xenophon himself in “The Anabasis“. Ford casts his story in the form of a loyal follower’s memoir, mixing an account of Xenophon’s early years, the story of the post-Peloponnesian War chaos that resulted in an army of Greek mercenaries fighting for a Persian, and a bit of melodrama into the tale of the peripatetic army.
