Spirits in the Grass

Bill Meissner

This is a nice little novel that reminded me W.P. Kinsella’s baseball stories.  The main character, Luke Tanner, is a 30-something amateur baseball player devoted to caring for the ball field where he hopes to relive his glory days.  While tending the field he finds what turns out to be Native American remains.  The rest of the story is about conflicts between the town and the nearby reservation, Luke and his father, and Luke and the girlfriend who wants him to want bigger things.   A few mysteries keep the pages turning.

Despite the cover design, baseball theme, and setting, “Spirits in the Grass” isn’t a “Field of Dreams” imitation.  It is a solid story with interesting characters and a well-drawn setting.
